Besides Bitcoin, born in 2009, there was Litecoin (born in 2011), Ripple (2012), Dogecoin (2013), Stellar (2014) and a handful of other cryptocurrencies.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cryptocurrencies were for the most part only means of payment, that is, currencies used to carry out simple financial transactions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today, Ethereum is the second largest cryptocurrency, with a market capitalization of $274 billion.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Founded by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/VitalikButerin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vitalik Buterin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Ethereum was a huge technological advance in the blockchain universe thanks to the implementation of smart contracts.
